5.6.7.EIGHT

Apr 30, 2019

This week on 5.6.7.EIGHT, Aleksandra interviews Katherine Barkman, an award-winning American ballerina who is currently a dancer at The Washington Ballet and has performed as an international guest principal across the world. She began her career as a principal dancer at the prestigious Ballet Manila in Southeast Asia and, at 18, was the youngest artist to claim this role. Katherine has won numerous dance accolades, including consecutive Silver Medals from two of the most prestigious ballet competitions — the XI USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, MS, and the XXVIII Varna International Ballet Competition in Bulgaria.

On the podcast, Katherine recounts her inspiring ballet journey. Having only begun ballet lessons at the age of 14, Katherine’s drive to succeed thrust her into the international eye — even with no prior professional experience — and ultimately granted her the opportunity to move across the world only four years later. From Pennsylvania to Manila to Washington, D.C. (and many places in between), she has collected a wealth of wisdom about the nature of our dreams, the importance of performing for the love of the craft, and how grit and determination can accomplish more than we realize.
